Telling the Kingston Story…. the building of a bustling frontier town.

In 1860 Kingston was a tiny settlement of approximately 140 people, clinging to the coast and isolated from the interior for a large part of the year by water and sandhills.

How did it develop into the bustling service hub and summer holiday destination it is today?

Largely it comes down to the determination, toughness and the generosity shown by Kingston people over many generations.

From its earliest beginnings, Kingston had to be self-reliant and proactive in providing the services for its growing community; a school, a hospital, churches and other facilities the community required to improve its quality of life and make Kingston a pleasant and convenient place to live.

Philanthropy has played a significant role in the development of Kingston. One might say that the town we know today was built on it.

What is Philanthropy?

Derived from the Greek words meaning “love of humanity”, it refers to the practice of giving resources (money, time, talent) to improve the wellbeing of others and society.

It involves charitable acts and other good works aimed at benefiting individuals and communities.

Many of the sites of our town facilities, the Tennis Club, the Bowling Club, The Senior Citizens, the Hospital, Gall Park, The Pony Club, the Cape Jaffa Lighthouse, The Kingston Retirement Village, to name a few, were donated by Kingston Philanthropists. Many people have given generously of their time, skills and money, according to their means, for the benefit of the town.

The Kingston Community Foundation is carrying on this tradition.

Early in the new financial year, it will make settlement on The Old Woolstore which will be leased out to provide ongoing funds to support three Kingston institutions: The Kingston Community School, The Kingston Soldiers Memorial Hospital and the Kingston Branch of the National Trust. This is just the first of many projects the Foundation will undertake to benefit the Kingston Community in the future and improve the quality of life for all.
